2018 Alumni Tour Itinerary

Day One — Tuesday, May 8

Depart Pittsburgh in the afternoon for Philadelphia and your overnight connecting flight to Munich, Germany.

Day Two — Wednesday, May 9

After arriving in Munich, we board our private coach for a drive to the Bavarian spa town of Bad Reichenhall, the location of the old salt mines from which Salzburg gets its name. After lunch in the restaurant Salin, we continue to our base in Austria for a festive welcome dinner at Stiegkeller in Salzburg’s Altstadt, or Old Town.

Day Three — Thursday, May 10

This morning we take a guided walking tour of the lovely Baroque city of Salzburg, ruled by archbishops for five centuries under the Holy Roman Empire. Following our walk, we will visit Hellbrunn Palace, a villa known for its mirthful trick fountains. In the evening we will dine at Hohensalzburg Castle followed by a concert by the Mozart Chamber Orchestra.

Day Four — Friday, May 11

In the morning we will tour the sights in and around Salzburg made famous in the Oscar-winning film “The Sound of Music.” We will then proceed into the Alps to the historical city of Berchtesgaden, where we’ll have lunch and some free time to explore before we head back down to Salzburg.

Day Five — Saturday, May 12

Our last day in Austria will be free to spend as you like, sightseeing, shopping, or simply relaxing. In the evening we will hold a farewell dinner at the quaint Zum Zirkelwert, offering traditional Austrian favorites such as wienerschnitzel and goulash and lovely dessert pastries of fruit and chocolate.

Day Six — Sunday, May 13

After breakfast this morning, we travel west through the Alps, stopping at the scenic Chiemsee, the biggest lake in Bavaria. Lunch is on the sunny terrace of country-style restaurant Zum Fischer am See. Then we finish our day’s journey in Munich, founded in 1158, Germany’s third largest city and the capital of Bavaria. After check-in, the evening is at your leisure.

Day Seven — Monday, May 14

Our guide will take us on a driving tour to the main sights of Munich — Olympic Stadium, Nymphenburg Palace, the Alte Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne art galleries — followed by a walk through the heart of the city, with its markets, churches, and the famous chiming Glockenspiel on the Town Hall belfry overlooking central Marienplatz. Our welcome dinner is at Zum Franziskaner, a classic Bavarian beer hall just steps away from the square.

Day Eight — Tuesday, May 15

We travel to the legendary fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein, built by “mad” King Ludwig II in the 1800s as an homage to his favorite Wagner opera and the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Lunch is at the storybook timbered hotel next door, then free time in the afternoon before our return to Munich.

Day Nine — Wednesday, May 16

We take a tour to Dachau, location of the notorious Nazi concentration camp and now a memorial site and museum, and a place of pilgrimage and reflection. The afternoon will permit some further free time, and in the evening we gather for a final farewell dinner at Hirschau in the lovely Englischer Garten park.

Day Ten — Thursday, May 17

After breakfast, we check out and return to Munich airport for our flight back to Pittsburgh, with a transfer in Philadelphia.
