Some of Pittsburgh's Finest

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Three RMU alumni are part of Pittsburgh’s 50 Finest, an annual summer awards gala hosted by Whirl magazine to honor career success and community involvement while raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Joel AcieJoel Acie ’02 works at UPMC as the minority-owned, women-owned, and disadvantaged business enterprise (MWDBE) project manager, helping to provide such businesses with increased access to purchasing. Aside from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Acie also volunteers with the National Minority Supplier Development Council.

While Acie majored in health services management, he says his communication skills classes at RMU also were a huge asset for his current line of work. “From public speaking, writing skills, efficiently getting one’s point across, and interacting with others, everything I learned at RMU is applied to my work.”

Danielle WhiteDanielle White ’06 owns three Fox’s Pizza restaurants and will soon open a fourth in Moon Township. Every year her restaurants each donate more than 500 pizzas to charitable organizations to help with fundraising. Her volunteer work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation started with her sorority when she was a marketing major at Robert Morris.

“If everyone could utilize community service properly, and young kids and college students would become more involved, it would be so much easier for them to find work after they graduate,” White says. "Volunteer work is filled with good people who are always excited about what they do.”

Candace Haywood

Candace Haywood ‘10 is the program manager of the social services employment assistance program at Small Seeds Development. She says her business classes at Robert Morris helped her to prepare for both for her job and as a volunteer fundraiser.

Haywood says the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is critical in raising awareness not just about the illness, but about how anyone can have a role in community service. “If we all just do a little more to give back to our communities, we would be living in a totally different world,” she says.
